WP5 - Mobilizing Research Infrastructures to foster blue biotechnology ecosystems in maritime regions



The objective of WP5 is to mitigate the geographical and technological isolation of maritime regional research driven clusters (RRDCs) by mobilizing complementary RIs, in order to promote the development of innovative marine technology transfer projects.


1. Analysing blue biotechnology regional research driven clusters (RRDCs) to get:

-> a better understanding of the impact of RIs on the blue  bio-economy of their cognate territories;

-> a better view on blue biotech value chains, with the identification of gaps and opportunities to take advantage of complementarities between different regions.


2. Analysing technology transfer (TT) practice and creating a ‘community of practice’ for TT officers in the EMBRIC project to achieve:

-> a better understanding of the challenges of TT practice;

-> guidelines for better TT practice in different regional settings;

-> sharing of good TT practices.


3. Analysing the added value of EMBRIC in promoting blue biotechnology to:

-> demonstrate that EMBRIC has generated successful, innovative projects in marine biotechnology by mobilizing European RIs;

-> design an impact pathway methodology that will be applicable to further marine biotechnology projects, beyond the selected case studies.


Main Activities: 


Task 5.1- The capabilities and scientific output of EMBRC sites will be described, and their connection with their socio-economic regional environment will be analysed along a number of key variables. This will be achieved through a quantitative assessment of the contribution of marine biology institutions in terms of publications, patents and contracts, and a more qualitative (although systematized and standardized) case study approach to assessing the socio-economic impacts of marine biotechnology projects. This task will be performed in collaboration with different stakeholders including ERA-NET MarineBiotech, REMCAP, and the Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions (CPMR), which will analyse the importance of blue biotechnologies in the smart specialization strategy of the EMBRC regions (and others).

Task 5.2 – The TT practices among the EMBRIC partners and their linkage to innovation systems will be mapped and analysed. This knowledge will be used to build a community of practice for TT officers in the EMBRIC project. Important activities in building this community will be: i) sharing knowledge on different type of TT practice among members; ii) setting up workshops where members will present and discuss TT practices; iii) develop an internet forum for the TT community; iv) stimulate learning and foster cooperation between TT officers through training sessions.

Task 5.3 - Tailored tools will be created to assess the socio-economic impact of EMBRIC partners key projects. Two broad assessment activities will be performed: i) description of the critical events and effects of the selected projects; ii) multi-dimensional assessment of impact pathway on completed innovation projects.

This work will be performed in close interaction with WPs 2 and 3 for the surveying of ongoing technology development activities and with WPs 6-8 for the monitoring of the innovation case studies. Training actions will be undertaken in concert with WP9.
